INDIE MELBOURNE PRODUCTIONS (IMP) is a local group of filmmakers and screenwriters working independently to promote screen culture in Victoria.

FILM ECLECTIC is the proud initiative of IMP; a film screening designed to showcase the best work of short filmmakers in the country.

Now in its third year, Film Eclectic began in 2000 when the recently founded IMP wanted to organize for a quality venue to show their films to their cast and crew. Cinemedia @ Treasury Theatre in the city was the venue mentioned in such musings. On November 23, Film Eclectic 2000 premiered there. Off its success, IMP decided to turn it into an annual screening with the view that Film Eclectic be established as a major film event in Victoria.

Film Eclectic 2001 branched off from Film Eclectic 2000's modest beginnings (all filmmakers back then contributed to the cost of the venue hire and had their money returned after ticket sales). First up, IMP decided entries be opened up to the public- previously the short films had been hand-picked from colleagues and other festivals. For Film Eclectic 2001, entries were received from all over Australia. The event now had sponsors too- Splitrock, Mike Reeds Video Productions, MBE and IF Magazine. The screening was for the first time a competitive one with judges from the AFI, including Lisa Pieroni (Marketing Manager) and Paul Harris.

Audience response to both screenings has been encouraging. Extensive promoting meant Film Eclectic played to near-packed houses and the quality of the films is always a crowd-pleaser. This is certainly the screening for any film buff to be part of; whether in the audience or entering films.

FILM ECLECTIC 2002 will be on Tuesday 20th October, the night beginning at 7:30pm. The venue is Kaleide Theatre, 360 Swanston Street, Melbourne (at RMIT). All tickets are $7.50 and refreshments are provided.

The screening program is particularly entertaining this year with several comedies thrown into the mix along with drama and doco shorts. A competitive screening, prizes will be awarded to Best Film, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay.
